What have you learned thus far about designing instruction from a multiple media perspective?
What I have learned about designing instruction from a multiple media perspective is that if one doesn’t have a clear picture of how the multiple media aspects work and behave with one another, the work can become frustrating. I would have liked to have had a better understanding of how roll over effects behave because this is the one area of this week’s assignment that I had the most trouble with. Looking back, I should have spent more time developing a sketch concept for each individual layer and one for the whole project.
How do you think the use of audio-visual instruction will benefit teaching and learning? What do you think will be potential issues with the use of audio-visual instruction?
Audio-visual instruction can benefit teaching and learning as it has the ability to reach different kinds of learners. Some learners learn best visually while others do best with audio instructions. Audio-visual instruction can also enhance teaching and improve student comprehension. Also, audio-visual instructions can benefit special needs students.
There are potential issues with audio-visual. Some researchers have suggested that audio/video redundancy is detrimental to memory, claiming that visual content distracts from audio content (Edwardson, et al., 1976). Another thing to keep in mind is to make sure that the multimedia content is consistent with the curriculum objectives. And also, just because the technology is available, it doesn't mean it must be used or integrated in the classroom.
How do you think it will impact your teaching and learning?
Audio-visual instruction will impact my teaching in that I now have the ability to produce audio-visual content that can allow me to reach different learners. But because this type of content is time-consuming, it would be difficult for me to be able to produce it often. I think if I had a group of designers working with me, I would be more willing to encourage my faculty to consider developing audio-visual instructions to be used in their courses.
